LASIK & PRK at Chico Eye Center

The most experienced Intra-lase (all laser, bladeless) LASIK and PRK surgeons in Northern California and the only fellowship-trained refractive surgeon in Chico.

What is LASIK?

LASIK is the most well-known form of laser vision correction. This outpatient procedure offers almost immediate vision improvement, with little to no discomfort and rapid recovery.

During LASIK

  • A thin flap is created on the surface of the cornea
  • A precise laser reshapes the underlying corneal tissue
  • The flap is repositioned, where it naturally heals without stitches

Benefits of LASIK

  • Rapid visual recovery (often within 24 hours)
  • Minimal discomfort
  • Excellent visual outcomes for nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism

Am I a LASIK Candidate?

  • 21+ years old
  • Have stable vision for at least 1 year
  • Have a prescription that falls within the treatable range
  • Have a healthy and thick cornea
  • Are free of diseases or conditions that could impair the procedure or healing process

What is PRK?

PRK is an outpatient procedure that eliminates the risk of flap complications. It is a proven alternative to LASIK and was actually the first form of laser vision correction.

During PRK

  • The outer layer of the cornea (epithelium) is gently removed
  • A laser reshapes the cornea to correct vision
  • The surface layer naturally regenerates over several days

Benefits of PRK

  • No corneal flap (better for patients with thinner corneas)
  • Excellent long-term visual outcomes
  • PRK is ideal for patients where corneal structure or lifestyle makes LASIK less optimal (e.g., contact sport athletes, military, first responders).

LASIK vs PRK: Key Differences You Should Know

LASIK offers faster recovery and minimal discomfort. PRK has a slower recovery but is safer for certain corneal conditions. Both procedures use the same advanced laser technology and achieve comparable long-term results. The best procedure depends on the following factors: corneal thickness and shape; prescription and visual goals; lifestyle and occupational needs; and overall eye health.

Not a Candidate for LASIK or PRK?

If you’ve been told you’re not a candidate for LASIK or PRK, Chico Eye Center may have another solution: Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE).
