Blepharitis (Eyelid Inflammation)

Blepharitis is a common condition that causes red, irritated eyelids, crusting along the lashes, and a gritty or burning sensation. Ongoing management and proper eyelid care can significantly improve symptoms and prevent flare-ups. Click here to schedule an appointment.

Cataracts

A clouding of the eye’s natural lens that causes blurry or dim vision. Cataracts are common in people over 65 years old. Click here to learn more about cataract treatment options at Chico Eye Center.

Corneal Conditions

A group of conditions affecting the cornea, including:

  • Keratoconus – a progressive eye disease in which the normally round cornea thins and begins to bulge into a cone-like shape. In patients with keratoconus, the cone-shaped cornea deflects light and causes distorted vision. Click here for a downloadable infographic from LivingWithKC.com.
  • Fuchs’ Dystrophy – an inherited eye disease that causes the cells in the innermost layer of the cornea to deteriorate, leading to distorted vision and corneal swelling. As these cells continue to deteriorate, fluid will continue to build up and vision will worsen. Once these cells are lost, they do not grow back.
  • Pterygium – a benign growth of the conjunctiva (the lining of the white part of the eye) that grows on to the cornea and partially covers the iris (colored part of the eye). Patients with a pterygium often first notice the condition because of the appearance of a lesion on their eye or because of dryness, itchiness, irritation, tearing, and/or redness.

Vitreous Floaters

However, a sudden increase in new floaters may indicate a problem. Please schedule an appointment with Chico Eye Center if you have a sudden increase in floaters.

What are considered common pediatric eye conditions?

Below is a list of common pediatric eye conditions treatable at Chico Eye Center. Visit APPOS for a complete glossary of pediatric eye conditions and for more information on each of the described conditions below.

Amblyopia

Vision loss resulting from a failure of visual development during childhood. It can occur in one or both eyes and is typically caused by a large or asymmetric glasses prescription or strabismus.

Strabismus

Eye misalignment, which can result from numerous causes. Eyes may be crossed (esotropia), wandering (exotropia), or vertically deviated (hypertropia). This can occur in both children and adults.

Nasolacrimal Duct Obstruction

Blockage of tear drainage into the nose occurs in 5% of infants as the nasolacrimal duct did not fully open before birth. This causes symptoms of tearing, discharge, and eyelid redness.

Pseudostrabismus

The anatomy of an infant’s face can create the illusion that the eyes are crossed, even when they are actually straight. This is commonly observed in photographs or if the infant is looking slightly off-center. A complete eye exam is needed to differentiate pseudostrabismus from true strabismus.

“Lazy Eye”

Lazy eye is a term given to a variety of eye conditions. While some use it to describe vision loss due to amblyopia, others use it to describe eye misalignment from strabismus and still others use the term for a droopy eyelid due to ptosis.
