Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty)

Eyelid surgery (Blepharoplasty) can rejuvenate puffy, sagging or tired-looking eyes by removing excess fat, skin and muscle from the upper and/or lower eyelids. Eyelid surgery incisions are hidden in the creases of the eyelids. The surgeon removes excess tissue through these incisions and then stitches them closed with fine sutures. These sutures are then removed after several days. The effects of eyelid surgery can last for many years!

Looking for a little more? Combined with BOTOX® or JUVÉDERM® treatments, eyelid surgery can help lift the eyebrows and soften the appearance of wrinkles, crow’s feet or dark circles under the eyes.

If sagging or drooping eyelids interfere with your vision, eyelid surgery may be considered medically necessary. In such cases, insurance may provide coverage, depending on your plan and clinical documentation.

Ptosis Repair vs. Blepharoplasty: What's the Difference?

Many patients use the term “droopy eyelids” to describe several different concerns. While upper blepharoplasty and ptosis repair can both create a more open, refreshed appearance, they address different underlying problems.

  • Upper Blepharoplasty removes excess skin and tissue from the upper eyelids. This procedure is ideal for patients whose eyelids appear heavy or hooded because of loose, aging skin. By removing the excess skin, blepharoplasty can improve both appearance and, in some cases, peripheral vision.

  • Ptosis Repair corrects a drooping eyelid caused by weakness or stretching of the muscle that lifts the eyelid. In patients with ptosis, the eyelid itself sits too low and may partially cover the pupil, making the eyes appear tired or uneven and sometimes interfering with vision. Ptosis repair works by tightening or repositioning the eyelid lifting muscle to restore a more natural eyelid height.

In simple terms, blepharoplasty removes excess skin, while ptosis repair raises the eyelid itself. Many patients have both conditions and benefit from having the procedures performed together for the best functional and cosmetic outcome.

During your consultation, your eyelids will be carefully evaluated, and it will be determined whether blepharoplasty, ptosis repair, or a combination of both procedures is the most appropriate treatment for your goals.
