Dr. Gilbert has practiced in Chico for 25 years. He graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point, NY and served in the US Army as a Combat Engineer Officer prior to attending medical school at Georgetown University in Washington, DC. After completing the US Army Flight Surgeon Course at Fort Rucker, AL he then served as a Brigade Medical Officer and Flight Surgeon in Germany, Turkey and Iraq as part of the Northern Iraq International Coalition Force. Returning from overseas, he completed ophthalmology residency at Madigan Army Medical Center and then served as the ophthalmologist for the 82nd Airborne Division and Special Forces at Fort Bragg, NC. He was also the Director of the first US Army LASIK Center. Recently, he completed his military service as a flight surgeon for the 173rd F-15 Fighter Wing in Klamath Falls as a member of the Air National Guard. In addition to his work at Chico Eye Center, he continues to serve veterans as a staff ophthalmologist at the Chico VA Eye Clinic. Dr. Gilbert is an instrument-rated private pilot and enjoys sailing, biking and running. He and his wife, Dr. Vally Gilbert, have two sons, two daughters, and now six grandchildren.
