Diabetic Retinopathy

Diabetic Eye Care at Chico Eye Center: Early Detection. Consistent Monitoring. Better Outcomes

Diabetes can affect your eyes in ways that are not always noticeable at first. That is why regular, comprehensive eye exams and advanced imaging are essential. At Chico Eye Center, we closely monitor your eye health throughout the year to detect even the earliest signs of diabetic eye disease and take action quickly.

Diabetic retinopathy is a leading cause of vision loss worldwide. Diabetes can damage the retina’s blood vessels and nerve cells before changes are visible on a regular eye exam.

If you are diabetic and are experiencing any of the following symptoms, contact Chico Eye Center immediately:

  • Dark spots
  • Floaters or strings in vision
  • Vision loss
  • Blurry vision
  • Changes in color perception

Your care plan may include a combination of the following technologies to evaluate the health of your retina and blood vessels:

OCT Macula Imaging
This scan provides a detailed cross-sectional view of the retina, allowing us to detect swelling or fluid buildup associated with diabetic macular edema.

OCT Angiography (OCT-A)
This non-invasive imaging technology maps the blood flow in your retina. It helps identify changes in blood vessels before they affect your vision.

Electroretinography (ERG)
ERG measures how well your retina is functioning by evaluating its electrical responses to light. This can help detect early retinal changes related to diabetes.

Comprehensive Eye Exams
Routine exams allow your doctor to assess overall eye health, monitor vision changes, and identify any progression of diabetic eye disease.

Patients with diabetes require ongoing care to protect their vision. Depending on your individual needs, your doctor may recommend multiple visits throughout the year to closely track any changes.

By monitoring your eyes regularly, we can detect problems early, guide treatment decisions, and help prevent vision loss before it occurs.

It is recommended that all diabetics, pre-diabetics, and borderline diabetics should have at least a yearly exam.

Every patient’s condition is different. We tailor your exam schedule and testing based on your health, risk factors, and lifestyle to ensure you receive the right level of care at the right time.
